Lagos State Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences has confiscated 124 commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okada, during enforcement operations carried out between December 31, 2025, and January 4, 2026.
The Taskforce Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP, Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this while cautioning uniformed security personnel against flouting traffic regulations by operating motorcycles on restricted routes, stressing that law enforcement officers must uphold, not undermine, the law.
Akerele issued the warning while addressing a delegation of uniformed personnel who visited his office on Wednesday to seek the release of motorcycles seized during recent operations.
He maintained that all offenders, regardless of status, must comply with Lagos State traffic and environmental regulations or face legal consequences.
He explained that motorcycles impounded during the exercise would only be disposed of through due legal process.
“All seized motorcycles will be forfeited to the Lagos State Government upon the orders of a competent court, in line with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018,” he said.
Expressing concern over the involvement of uniformed officers in the violations, Akerele noted that such conduct damages the credibility of security agencies.
“I am neither wicked nor weak, and I will not allow this Taskforce to be seen as lenient in the enforcement of the law,” he stated.
He acknowledged the operational demands faced by security personnel but insisted that adherence to the law remains non-negotiable.
“We understand the urgency of reporting to duty, but the means of transportation adopted must be lawful. Where officers are properly dressed in uniform, not conveying passengers, and not violating restricted routes, discretion may be exercised,” he added.
Akerele urged all security operatives to conduct themselves professionally and avoid actions capable of bringing their institutions into disrepute.
He described it as unacceptable for military, paramilitary and police personnel to misuse their uniforms as a shield while engaging in illegal commercial motorcycle operations.
Meanwhile, the Taskforce has sustained its environmental and traffic enforcement drive across the state.
Akerele said the latest operations covered areas such as Ikoyi, Abraham Adesanya Junction, Ogombo, Coastal Road, Ajah, Falomo and Marina, where several defiant okada operators were apprehended for causing traffic obstructions and posing safety risks on highways and newly constructed coastal routes.
