A legal practitioner, Oba Maduabuchi, SAN, has taken a different opposing view on the much debated state police in the country to curb insecurity.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Maduabuchi said leaving police in the hands of the governors could become an instrument of oppression.
DAILY POST had reported that President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday called on the National Assembly to start fashioning out modalities to amend the constitution in order to incorporate State Police.
Reacting, the lawyer said, “You do not establish a police force because people are angry or because others are calling for it.
“It must be carefully thought through. Poorly funded state police risk becoming toll-gate checkpoints where extortion replaces genuine security work.
“The prevalent security issues are not due to an insufficient state police presence, as nearly every Nigerian state possesses some form of policing.
“For instance, the Western region has Amotekun, providing security without requiring official police status. Similarly, the Southeast has its forest guards who pursue kidnappers into the bush until they are arrested. In the Middle Belt, the Civilian Joint Task Force complements police efforts in ensuring security.”
