Nigeria’s political landscape is witnessing fresh realignments as at least two serving governors elected on opposition platforms are set to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State and Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State are expected to be formally received into the APC this week during separate events.
In Kano, Governor Yusuf’s anticipated return to the APC follows his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a move that has triggered a wave of defections within the state.
DAILY POST recalls that several senior political figures, including members of the Kano State House of Assembly, 8 federal lawmakers, and all 44 local government chairmen, have already abandoned the NNPP.
Yusuf’s media aide, Bature Tofa, indicated that the governor’s decision was informed by his political background and his assessment that the APC offers a stronger and more dependable platform for governance.
In Plateau State, preparations are in top gear for what is expected to be a major political gathering in Jos, where Governor Caleb Mutfwang will be officially welcomed into the APC on Tuesday.
The event is expected to attract various political figures like the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as well as several governors, ministers, and key party stakeholders.
Describing the occasion as historic, the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, Sir Joseph Ari, said in a statement that the Plateau State capital would take centre stage in national politics during the reception.
He added that arrangements had been concluded for a grand welcome for the governor.
