China has relaxed entry rules for British citizens, allowing up to 30 days of visa-free travel for business, tourism, and other brief visits.
The agreement is one of the gains of the state visit of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is in China with a delegation of UK officials and business leaders.
Britain joins France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, and other countries whose nationals can access the visa-free regime. China recently extended the timeline to December 2026.
The UK government said businesses will have more opportunities to grow and expand into the Chinese market, bolstering growth and supporting jobs at home.
The renewed UK-China partnership transverse government relations and business in the healthcare, legal services, financial and professional services, and education and skills sectors.
Both nations have agreed to carry out a study to explore whether to enter negotiations towards a bilateral services agreement that would establish rules for British firms doing business in China.
The UK is the world’s second largest exporter of services, and with a growing demand from China, £13billion worth of services is projected to be sold by UK firms to China annually.
Prime Minister Starmer noted that many businesses are eager to grow their footprints in China, being one of the world’s economic powerhouses.
The leader said with the relaxed visa rules for short-term travel, Britain will “support them to expand abroad,” while boosting growth and jobs at home.
The UK and China signed agreements on Health; Field of Conformity Assessment; Transnational Organised Crime and Illegal Immigration; Domiciliary Services and Sports Industries; Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
Other agreements cover a Joint Study on UK-China Trade in Services Agreement; Exports from the UK to China; Strengthening the UK-China Joint Economic and Trade Commission; and Food Safety, Animal, and Plant Quarantine.
