Gully erosion: Abia lawmaker begs FG, international community for intervention in Ohafia

The Chairman, Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Urban Renewal and NEWMAP, Nwoke Mba Kalu, has appealed to the Federal Government and the international community to rescue his constituency, Ohafia South, from the menace of gully erosion.

According to the lawmaker, the gully erosion in the area has claimed lives, swallowed houses and destroyed economic trees over the years.

Kalu made the appeal when his Committee and NEWMAP officials embarked on oversight visit to Elu/Amuke, Onyirimba and Bakasi Amaekpu erosion sites, all in Ohafia LGA of Abia State.

He lamented that large expanse of land was affected by the erosion menace, noting that the ecological crises has defied all communal efforts of his people at controlling it.

An official of NEWMAP said that the affected erosion sites need urgent intervention to forestall further destruction of lives and properties.

The organization advised the affected communities to stop further dumping of refuse within the erosion sites, stating that dumping of waste materials can cause more damage in the future.

The NEWMAP officials also informed the people of Amaekpu Ohafia that they have the record of Onyirimba and Bakasi erosion sites which need intervention, adding that the Elu/Amuke erosion site also needs attention.

Speaking earlier on behalf of the affected communities, the Chairman of Ohafia Traditional Council, Eze Oscar Kalu Osonwa, and President General of Ohafia Improvement Union, Prince Kalu Ikpemini, thanked the lawmaker for drawing the attention of government to their travails.
