The Lagos State Government has announced plans to comprehensively redesign the Obalende Underbridge.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Wednesday while addressing journalists after an inspection tour of Obalende and surrounding areas.
Wahab recalled that the government had earlier visited the location in late 2024 to assess conditions and carry out a cleanup, noting that the state is now set to formally transfer the space to a major corporate organisation under a corporate social responsibility, CSR, arrangement.
“We are returning to Obalende because we are ready to officially hand over the space to one of the largest corporate bodies, which has agreed to take it on as part of its CSR initiative.
“The underbridge will be redesigned and cleaned in an environmentally responsible way, and the handover process begins today,” he said.
According to the commissioner, although approval for the project was granted in 2024, implementation was delayed due to extensive consultations over a design that aligns with sustainability standards and the objectives of both the state government and the corporate partner.
He explained that the redesigned underbridge would retain its function as a garage, while also incorporating additional facilities such as public conveniences and designated sleeping bays.
The corporate partner, he added, will be responsible for the long-term maintenance of the facility.
“Our goal is to transform the space into a functional and habitable environment that reflects the needs of a 21st-century economy and a modern city like Lagos,” Wahab said, adding that the final design would be shared with the media once the handover is completed.
He also revealed that Lagos Island Local Government has developed a separate redesign plan for the Oja Oba Underbridge, stressing that underbridge spaces across the state must be productively utilised.
“Public spaces like these should serve meaningful purposes. The underbridge at Osborne, for instance, is now being used as a football facility,” the commissioner noted.
