At least 15 people have died and 49 others infected in a Lassa fever outbreak across several local government areas in Taraba State.
The Acting Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, Dr. Suleiman Kirim, confirmed the figures while providing an update on the situation.
He said 45 patients are currently receiving treatment at various health facilities, while 20 have recovered and been discharged.
“This is the largest Lassa fever outbreak the state has witnessed in the past 14 years,” Dr. Kirim said, expressing concern over delays in seeking medical care.
He noted that many patients initially rely on traditional remedies or self-medication before visiting a hospital, a factor contributing to the rising death toll.
Dr. Kirim added that the Federal Medical Centre is collaborating with the Taraba State Government and the Centre for Disease Control to strengthen surveillance and improve emergency response.
He also urged residents to maintain environmental hygiene and promptly report any symptoms to the nearest health facility.
