Ogun-Guangdong fire incident not gas explosion – Management

The Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone, OGFTZ, has clarified that the fire outbreak that engulfed the Good Mattress FZE section, one of the enterprises operating within the zone, was not from a gas explosion.

Recall that the fire occurred at about 8:00 am on Sunday from the foam-producing company in the industrial park.

In a video obtained by our correspondent, students were seen running out of their hostels as the thick smoke covered the sky, causing chaos and fear for those living around the Obanla axis of the area.

The management of OGFTZ in a statement to address the incident on Monday, stated that no casualties were recorded during the incident, neither did it extend to residential areas.

According to the statement signed by Steve Makanjuola for the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, NEPZA, China-Africa Investment FZC, the cause of the fire remained unknown, assuring that verified findings will be communicated in due course.

He reassured members of the public that the issue is completely under control, adding that zone is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational integrity.

Parts of the statement reads, “The fire was professionally contained through the prompt response of OGFTZ’s internal fire service team, in close collaboration with the Ogun State Fire Service and other private companies with established working relationships with the Zone. This timely intervention successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining enterprises.

“There were no casualties recorded, and the incident was effectively de-escalated before it could pose any wider risk.

“Contrary to misleading reports circulating online, the incident did not extend to any residential areas, nor was it a gas explosion.

“The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and verified findings will be communicated through official channels in due course.

“OGFTZ reiterates that operations within the Free Trade Zone are conducted in a lawful and compliant manner, with strict adherence to all applicable legal, safety, and regulatory provisions.

“OGFTZ appreciates the cooperation and support of relevant government agencies, host community and other private companies during this challenging period. This collective response emphasize the importance of partnership, preparedness, and coordinated emergency management.”
