A non-profit organization, Yiaga Africa, has said that allocation of voters to new polling units by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, marred the election in some places.
Director of Programmes of the group, Cynthia Mbamalu, made this revelation on Saturday while speaking in an interview on Arise Television.
She said voters were allocated to new polling units but not informed ahead of time.
According to her, some voters got frustrated and did not have the patience to keep moving around looking for their new polling unit, adding that they went home and never got to vote.
“The commencement of polls was delayed in some polling units, impacting logistics management.
“Setup for voting materials was still ongoing as late as 9:00 AM for a process scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM, resulting in voters waiting for officials.
“Additionally, many voters were reassigned to new polling units without prior notification.
“Some voters only received messages about their reallocation hours after voting had started, leading to frustration and some voters giving up and returning home without casting their ballots.
“This issue highlights the need for informing voters about polling unit reallocations and new codes well in advance of elections,” she said.
DAILY POST reports that INEC conducted the Area Council election in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on February 21.
